How to prepare for NDA - National defense academy

The NDA is an integral part of the Indian Armed Forces. Here, the cadets get full and proper training before they are sent for their duties. This is the first tri-service academy in the world. It caters to the Army, Navy and Air force. The academy of the first tri-service is located in Pune, Maharashtra. This is one of the best ranked academies in the worlds.


The cadets who successfully complete the NDA program move to –

  • Indian Military Academy, Dehradun
  • Air Force Association, Dundigal, Hyderabad
  • Naval Academy, Ezhimala, Kerala.


Details about the NDA exam –

  • Name of the exam –National Defense Academy
  • Age requirement –
    • The minimum age for the candidates to apply is 16.5 years.
    • The maximum age for the candidate can be 19 years.
  • Educational Qualification –
    • Minimum 12th pass qualification for Army.
    • Minimum 12th pass with Physics and Mathematics for Navy and Air force.
    • Candidates who are appearing for the 12th exam may also apply.
  • Marital status – Only unmarried candidates can apply.
  • Exam frequency –
    • This exam is conducted twice a year.
    • Once in April and once in August.
  • Preparation time – Preparation required as soon as you clear your class 10th.
  • Mode of exam – Written test followed by an Intelligence and personality test.


Details about the written NDA exam –

  • The exam is conducted by UPSC.
  • The paper will be an online exam only.
  • The written exam has two sections.
  • Mathematics exam is for 300 marks.
  • General Ability is for 600 marks.
  • Each paper is for 2-2.5 hours.
  • Two medium of paper are available. Hindi and English only.


How to prepare for NDA exam –

  • For preparation in mathematics –
    • The syllabus is very vast and each topic is to be studied.
    • Students need to have clarity in concepts.
    • Concepts need to be very clear in the mind of the candidates.
    • Questions will be conceptual basis only.
    • A total of 200 questions are to be solved within 2 hours.
    • The speed and accuracy level will be tested.
    • Try and solve as many questions as possible.
    • Try different types of problems instead of doing the same problem.
    • Effective time management techniques need to be used.
    • Mental mathematics needs to be worked on.
    • Short cut methods need to be learnt.
    • Every question has a shorter method to solve the problem as well.
  • For preparation in General Ability –
    • There are two parts of the General Ability test.
    • One is English and the other is General Knowledge.
    • The English test is for 200 marks.
    • Basic grammar rules are to be thoroughly learnt.
    • The General Knowledge test is for 400 marks.
    • This includes General science, current affairs, arts literature etc.
    • Every day the newspaper has to be read.
    • Global and national news both are to be read.
    • Past policy changes and latest amendments are also to be learnt.
  • Preparing for Intelligence and Personality test –
    • This test is conducted after passing the written test.
    • Test assesses the candidates on topics like sense of responsibilities.
    • Candidates need to know themselves better to clear this test.


General information on how to prepare for NDA exam –

  • Fix your goal as soon as possible.
  • Try to set a target achievement date as well as year.
  • Start preparation as soon possible.
  • Prepare for each and every topic for sure.
  • Study the easy topics first and finish them.
  • Give more time to the difficult topics and cover them comfortably.
  • Identify your weak subjects and study them for a longer time.
  • Keep a check on your preparation and your plan.
  • Do not deviate from your study plan at all.
  • Do not wear yourself out during this preparation time.
  • There will be negative marking in the exam.
  • Accuracy and speed are the most essential parameters.
  • Your syllabus needs to be completed at least 2 months prior to the exam date.
  • Start giving mock tests and online exams to study your subject better.
  • Try to improve your score with every exam.
  • Study on those areas again where you have scored less.
  • Do not take guesses in this exam.
  • Read the question carefully before answering.
