How to prepare for GRE – Graduate Record Exam

The GRE Exam is an entrance test conducted by Graduation Schools. The purpose of this test is to admit students in various Masters and Doctoral level programs. The test is mandatory in English speaking countries. The Education Testing Service (ETS) conducts GRE Exam. The exam evaluates students on their various skills. Candidates appearing for this exam need to know how to prepare for GRE which can help them succeed in the exam.
 

GRE Eligibility –

  • There is no age bar for taking the GRE Exam.
  • All candidates passed from Graduate level program may appear.
     

GRE Score validity –

  • The GRE score is valid for 5 years from the date of issue.
     

GRE Exam No of attempts –

  • In a year, maximum of 5 attempts are allowed.
  • There are restrictions on the number of attempts overall.
     

GRE Exam Schedule –

  • The exam is a computer based online test.
  • It is conducted in 160 countries with 1,000 test centers.
  • Where computer based test is not available then paper based tests are conducted.
  • A minimum of 6 months of study is recommended for students.
     

GRE Examination Pattern –

1) For Computer based format – 

            a. Analytical Writing – Task 1 – Analyze an Issue – 30 Minutes.
     Task 2 – Analyze and Argument – 30 Minutes.
            b. Verbal Reasoning – Section 1 – 20 questions – 30 minutes
     Section 2 – 20 questions – 30 minutes
            c. Quantitative Reasoning – Section 1 – 20 questions – 35 minutes.
     Section 2 – 20 questions – 35 minutes
            d. Un-scored – No of question vary along with the time allotment.
            e. Research – No of question vary along with the time allotment.
            f. Un-scored and research sections do not affect the score of the test.

2) For paper based format – 

            a. Analytical Writing – Task 1 – Analyze an Issue – 30 Minutes.
     Task 2 - Analyze and Argument – 30 Minutes.
            b. Verbal Reasoning – Section 1 – 25 questions – 35 minutes
     Section 2 – 25 questions – 35 minutes
            c. Quantitative Reasoning – Section 1 – 25 questions – 40 minutes.

            d. Un-scored – Number of question vary along with the time allotment.
            e. Research – No of question vary along with the time allotment.
            f. Un-scored and research sections do not affect the score of the test.

Tips on how to prepare for GRE –

  • Candidates must start preparing at least 6 months prior to the exam date.
  • Candidates should know the format of the exam and study according to it.
  • Time allocation for each topic is one of the most important tasks.
  • Prepare a road map to achieve the Target Score.
  • Candidates must be updated with local as well as international news.
  • Latest happenings all across the globe are important.
  • Candidates should learn how to express their complex ideas with examples.
  • Practice all different topics of GRE exam.
  • Study material should cover all the topics in each section.
  • Online material can also be used in most of the cases.
  • English Language skills are to be sharpened.
  • There is no negative marking so candidates can attempt as many questions as they want.
  • All questions are to be read carefully before answering them.
  • Some questions might have single option as the correct one while some may have more than one option correct.
  • The revised General test of GRE allows candidate to move forward and back in a section.
