How to prepare for GATE – Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering

GATE  Overview –

GATE is one of the toughest exams held in the country for admissions into MBA and PhD Universities. How to prepare for GATE is a major task which challenges every aspiring candidate. First, some details about the GATE exam –

  • GATE is an all India examination which is held on behalf of IIT,IISC, MHRD and NCB.

  • If your score is brilliant in the GATE exam then you get a chance to study in the best of Universities.
  • The exam is conducted by – Indian Institute of Science and Indian Institutes of Technology.


Frequency of GATE Exam –

It is held annually in the months of February and March.


Validity of GATE Certificate –

Three years from the date of announcement of result.


GATE  Qualifying score –

The qualifying score is decided using the percentile method.


GATE Fees –

  • General  and OBC – Rs.1500/-
  • Females and SC/ST – Rs.750/-


GATE Important Dates (Tentative)

  • Start date to apply online – 1st September
  • Last date to apply online – 1st October
  • Exam dates – January to March.


GATE Examination Pattern –

  • The paper will be held online and is objective in nature.
  • Candidates need to get maximum questions correct to get a high score.
  • There is negative marking but the exact deduction of marks is not known.
  • Speed and accuracy of the candidate will be tested during the exam.


Eligibility Criteria –

  • A degree in bachelor of engineering in any field is required.
  • Only those candidates need to apply who are aspiring for a Masters degree.
  • Candidates applying for a PhD also have to undergo this test.
  • Candidates aspiring for a career in the Government sector may also apply.


Past paper results of GATE-

  • Number of students appeared in 2013 – 1.36 lakhs
  • Number of students appeared in 2014 – 15 lakhs
  • Number of students appeared in 2015 – 22 lakhs

This shows that the competition is very high for GATE. Therefore, the cut-offs are usually quite high as well. Aptitude level of the candidates will be tested in the GATE exam.


How to prepare for GATE –

  • Focus on the entire syllabus from the start.
  • Divide the syllabus into high scoring and low scoring areas.
  • Cover the high scoring areas first by all means.
  • Set timelines for yourself and proceed as per plan.
  • Find all the necessary and relevant study material within the first few days.
  • Concentrate and focus on Concepts. They will prove to be of great help.
  • Make proper notes which will help in revision later on.
  • Keep checking the preparation as per schedule in between.
  • Take frequent breaks inbetween to cool yourself down.
  • Try to increase the number of hours of study every day. However, the quality of study will matter more than the quantity. Therefore, study with determination and concentration.
  • The preparation should be completed atleast 2 months before the GATE exam. Spend the last few months in practicing using online exams and mock tests etc. Spend this time practicing for your speed and accuracy.
  • See your standings in the mock tests and learn from mistakes.
  • Cover those topics once again where you are loosing out on marks.
  • Start giving previous year GATE exams and see your score.
  • Start correcting all the mistakes being made in these mock exams.
  • Maintain a positive approach and see yourself succeed.
  • Do not burn yourself out in between; keep re-fuelling by taking necessary breaks.
  • Get familiar with all the formulae before the exam date as a brush up.
  • Cool, calm but thorough approach will help crack GATE.

Like all competitive exams, even this one is a tough nut to crack. However, prepare well and know your course material thoroughly. Also, remember that in this exam you will be checked on your speed and accuracy as well along with your knowledge of the subject.
